TEXT: TV Drama. Inane. Awful. Joseph Trumpeldor, Israel's legendary warrior met his death at the Battle of Tel Hai on March 1, 1920. Isa, now an old man, recounts his experiences and survival at Tel Hai, in a dramatization of the days before the battle and the battle, in which Trumpeldor is said to have uttered, "it is good to die for our country." The film makes the others look like sex starved, crazed morons, mental incompetents, or yahoos.
The official version: Israeli television drama. Acting: Shay Kaminski, Irena Shulman, Vladimir Fridman, Lior Ashkenazy, Yankale Alperi. The battle of Tel Hai took place on March 1, 1920. In this battle, Joseph Trumpeldor, Israel's most mythical warrior, found his death. Isa was there, next to Trumpeldor when the latter spoke his famous last words: It's good to die for our country. That sentence remains the most famous moment in the history of the Jewish settlement in Israel. But no one remembers Isa, maybe because he didn't die, or just because he didn't have anything interesting to say. 59 years have passed and now Isa is living in a home for the elderly. With no family and no work, Isa spends most of his time dreaming of past glory, and watching TV. Neil Armstrong is on the television, live from the moon: One small step for man, one great leap for mankind. Another famous sentence. The historical moment triggers Isa's memories, reminding him of Trumpeldor's last words. He starts telling the story of Tel Hai to his roommate. He speaks of impulsive settlers, his passion for guns, and about Trumpeldor, who was already a legend at that time. But more than all, Isa describes his love for, Dvora, one of the woman settlers. This unfulfilled love led indirectly to the beginning of the battle. Screened at the 17th Israel Festival in the USA in 2001.

TEXT: Documentary. Loving liberal parents do their beat to accept their youngest daughter's homosexuality. Maria, not ashamed of a lesbian life, brings her girlfriend home in the hope of being welcomed, like her brothers and girlfriends are. Her family views her as a disappointment and questions her choices in the course of the film. Maria's siblings and parents, as well as Maria and her girlfriend, express their individual points-of-view. While her eldest brother is firm in his disapproval, Maria's parents are far more conflicted, moving from initial condemnation and disappointment to re-evaluation, and, perhaps, eventual acceptance. Through the microcosm of the Talpalars, It Will End Up In Tears explores conventions of masculinity, femininity, sexuality, and family in contemporary Israel. Screened at the 17th Israel Festival in the USA in 2001, and the Newfestival.org in June 2001.

TEXT: 7 minute short. The director writes: Curtain no.2 is an animation film which deals with the experience of "being different" in our society. The film invites the viewers to reflect on their attitudes toward individuals different from themselves, in this case - a gay teenager. The film gives the viewers a glimpse into the hero's experience of loneliness and isolation, a common experience in the lives of gay teenagers who are 'closeted' and feel they have nobody to talk to about what's going on in their lives. Peers' attitudes and the massages communicated by parents and the media - all present a unified stand that the only acceptable lifestyle is a 'straight' lifestyle, while any other way is depicted as something tragic and ridiculous. The viewers' emotional experience is full of conflict and ambivalence: on the one hand the film makes one identify with the gay hero's distress, while at the same time it reminds them of the fact that they themselves are actively, even though sometimes quite unconsciously, take part in the societal process of rejecting the different.

The subject of the vignettes include a man in the Carmel Shuk in Tel Aviv who, although married, recalls a brief affair from years past; a group of 10 year olds devoted to just one girl; a Russian doctor who accidentally reunites with a past lover after they both immigrate to Israel; a kibbutz volunteer from france who loves, separates, and reconnects with a lover 20 years later, only to have her become ill (not a dry eye will survive the wedding scene), and a 92 year old woman who fulfills her dying husband's extraordinary last request. (what makes the film even better is that it revisits the subjects of the film three years after it was originally shot). This is a must see for any festival. TEXT: Shown at the Repertory Film Series of The Washington Jewish Film Festival, Boston JFF, Maine Intnl JFF, The Jewish Museum NYC, Jewish Artists On The Edge in Sante Fe, Palm Beach Jewish Film Festival, Contra Costa Jewish Film Festival, Florida Gold Coast Jewish Film Fest, and Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. Given a choice between long life and children, which would you choose? The rhetorical questions becomes the framework for Shari Rothfarb's allegorical film in which an Orthodox Jewish woman searches the streets of Brooklyn for her lost daughter. On the eve of her last visit to the mikvah (the Jewish ritual purification bath), Luna Singer, an Orthodox woman in Brooklyn, fears that the sum of her life is not enough. When her grown daughter Miriam vanishes, Luna's beliefs are thrown into question. Distraught, but confident that she will find her, Luna sets off on her journey through the Brooklyn streets, video camera in hand. As Miriam grows ever more elusive, Luna's grounding in the present slips further and further away. Then, on a rainy night as she accompanies her husband Jack in his taxi, she conceives the question, "If you had to choose between long life and children, which would you choose?" Driven by her need for an answer, Luna boldly takes her camera back out to the streets, asking her question of all who cross her path. The answers, funny, thoughtful and unique, only serve to deepen Luna's desperate search for her daughter, her anchor in life. With original music by Essev Bar, a multi-ethnic band from the Galilee, Israel, striking urban and underwater cinematography by up and coming NYC D.P. Milton Kam, and a moving performance by Karen Lynn Gorney (NY film, television and theater actor and disco diva/star of "Saturday Night Fever"), "Ocean Avenue" is a lyrical and evocative tale of one woman's psychic transition as she experiences the loss of a dream.
